IND vs ENG 2026: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has officially announced a powerhouse 17-member squad for the highly anticipated upcoming five-match T20I series against the reigning T20 World Cup champions, India. Explosive batter Harry Brook is set to lead the English side as full-time captain for the series, which kicks off on July 1, 2026.
The headline selection of the announcement is the inclusion of teenage sensation and uncapped all-rounder James Coles, who has earned his maiden international call-up following a spectacular run in the domestic circuit.
The Big Inclusion: Who is James Coles?
The 17-man squad features a stellar mix of experienced superstars and injection of fresh talent, but all eyes are on Sussex’s multi-skilled all-rounder James Coles. The youngster caught the selectors’ attention during his stellar stints with the England Lions and various global T20 leagues over the past 12 months. He was also a prominent part of England’s ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup campaign back in 2022.
England Men’s National Selector, Marcus North, highly praised the youngster’s inclusion:
“James Coles is an exciting addition and has earned his place following his performances with the England Lions and in T20 competitions here and abroad during the past 12 months. We have selected a larger squad to accommodate for the fact that this series will begin shortly after the Test series against New Zealand is due to conclude, which allows us to be flexible.”
Squad Dynamics: Key Returns and Big Misses
Aside from Coles, the ECB has recalled pacers Sonny Baker and Saqib Mahmood, alongside wicketkeeper-batter Jordan Cox. These three players represent the major structural changes from the English side that featured in the T20 World Cup earlier this March.
However, England will heavily miss the services of express fast bowler Brydon Carse and reliable bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton, both of whom have been ruled out of the entire series due to lingering injuries.
The core of England’s white-ball squad remains remarkably potent. Heavyweights like Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, and veteran spinner Adil Rashid have all retained their spots to challenge the Indian contingent on home soil.
A New Era for Team India Under Shreyas Iyer
This high-voltage bilateral series marks the beginning of a fresh T20I cycle leading up to the 2028 T20 World Cup and the upcoming Olympics.
Interestingly, Team India will enter this series under completely new leadership. Dynamic middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has officially taken over the T20I captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav, who has been rested alongside premier speedster Jasprit Bumrah and finisher Rinku Singh. The Indian squad also features fresh faces from IPL 2026, including teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and pace bowler Prince Yadav.
