Ajit Agarkar – After a highly successful stretch for Indian cricket on the global stage, chief selector Ajit Agarkar is keen to continue in his role through to the 2027 ODI World Cup. He has reportedly approached the BCCI, asking for an extension that would allow him to see through the team’s long-term plans.

According to a Times of India report by Sahil Malhotra, Agarkar’s current contract—already extended once until June 2026—is approaching another review point. With a major transition underway in the squad, the former India all-rounder wants to stay involved as the team builds toward the next 50-over World Cup, set to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

A Remarkable Run of Results

Since taking charge in June 2023, Agarkar has overseen what many would call one of India’s strongest white-ball phases in recent memory. The team has made it to four straight ICC finals, winning three of them:

  • 2024 T20 World Cup – Winners
  • 2025 ICC Champions Trophy – Winners
  • 2026 T20 World Cup – Winners
  • 2023 ODI World Cup – Finalists

That kind of consistency doesn’t happen by chance. Agarkar’s approach has been methodical, but he hasn’t shied away from bold decisions either. Backing Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain and carefully managing the transition of senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma across formats are moves that have drawn praise within the board.

Talk of Change Still Lingers

Even with the success, there’s been no shortage of speculation around his position. As always in Indian cricket, big roles attract big names, and a few have already been linked to the job if the BCCI decides to go in a different direction.

Zaheer Khan has come up frequently in discussions, thanks to his tactical sharpness and experience mentoring IPL teams. Parthiv Patel is another name doing the rounds, especially given his strong connect with domestic cricket and talent scouting. Harbhajan Singh, too, has been mentioned as someone interested in stepping into a more administrative role.

Stability Seems the Likely Call

For now, though, the mood within the BCCI appears to favor continuity over change. With the 2027 World Cup as the clear target, the current leadership group—including head coach Gautam Gambhir—seems to be working with a shared vision.

And when results are coming in consistently, there’s little urgency to fix something that isn’t broken.

Agarkar, in many ways, has also taken on the responsibility of handling tough calls publicly, allowing the players to stay focused on their cricket. That balance has worked well so far.

As things stand, all indications suggest he is likely to remain at the helm, guiding India’s squad development over the next couple of years—and possibly right through to the final moments of the 2027 World Cup.
